Borussia Dortmund (0) 0-1 (4) Tottenham: Spurs progress

In a competition like the UEFA Champions League, you can t rely on your reputation alone to get you through. The very best clubs across European football compete in the UCL every single year, and one mistake can completely throw you off the track. Over the course of two legs, Borussia Dortmund probably would ve been expected to have dispatched of Tottenham Hotspur but in the end, the Premier League side were able to put in two superb performances to book their place in the quarter finals.

Pushing through

Spurs were carrying over a dominant 3-0 lead from the first leg as they prepared for the game in Germany, and while they would ve been confident of avoiding elimination, this is Spurs we re talking about here. Plus, they happened to be going up against the team that many fans are considering to be the favourites to win the Bundesliga title this year.

Dortmund lived up to the hype in the first half, battering Tottenham s goal with a series of shots that would ve left the travelling fans feeling pretty nervous. The atmosphere was electric as the home fans sensed a potential upset, but as the minutes ticked by, it seemed more and more unlikely. Tottenham were starting to gain confidence with each missed attempt from the Germans, and early in the second half, they took advantage.

Making it count

Moussa Sissoko s pass was latched onto by star striker Harry Kane, who scored the away goal that confirmed Spurs passage into the next round. It was an incredibly professional and impressive performance from the North Londoners, who have been able to reach the last eight for the first time since back in 2011. Dortmund will have to go back to the drawing board, as they prepare to put even more emphasis on trying to win the league.

Tottenham s next game will come away at Southampton this weekend, whereas Dortmund will be hosting Stuttgart. Spurs will now await the draw for the quarter finals, where they could face some seriously tough teams as the race to become the Champions of Europe continues. With Real Madrid knocked out, though, we re guaranteed to get new champions which should make for some pretty exciting encounters in the next few rounds.
